Second Trimester Abortion
There are two ways to stop a pregnancy. They are a surgical abortion and a medical abortion. Both of these types of abortion are common and safe. If a woman is pregnant and thinks about an abortion, she may have questions about the abortion procedure. The pregnancy period is very important, as the abortions in the first and the second trimesters are different.
Abortion is a serious deliberate step that a woman does because of certain reasons and because of serious circumstances that make her to do it.
Most women who decide to have an abortion do this in the first trimester of their pregnancy, although the majority of the mass media usually show a lot of frightening photographs of the results of the abortions that were made in later pregnancy trimesters. As a rule, about 90% of all abortions occur in the first trimester before the 12th week of pregnancy.
Sometimes women face some serious circumstances that force them to have an abortion in the second trimester of their pregnancy. These circumstances include the following: a woman does not have the opportunity to pay for an abortion in the first trimester of her pregnancy; a woman didn’t know for a long time that she was pregnant because of the problem with an irregular menstrual cycle; a woman lives in a remote region where there are problems with medical care and there is no possibility to visit a gynecologist on time; a woman can’t decide for a long time whether to continue her a pregnancy or not; the pregnancy threatens the health and life of the mother; with the help of medical research and analysis it became known that the child will be born with a serious illness; some circumstances related to the relationships with the father of the child, which force the woman to finish the pregnancy.
According to statistics, the abortions in the second trimester are more common among adolescents than among adult women, but in many countries in the case if a teenager wants to make an abortion, parent permission is necessary, so it is important that the pregnant teenager should tell her parents about the pregnancy as soon as possible.
As for the abortion procedure in the second trimester, this excludes medical abortion, since it is only available in the first trimester before the 12th week pregnancy. Therefore, only a surgical abortion is possible in the second trimester of a pregnancy. A surgical abortion in the second trimester of a pregnancy can be of several types. They are:
- Dilation and evacuation (D & E) - the most common type of a second trimester abortion, which is performed with the help of special surgical instruments. The procedure of such an abortion takes about 30 minutes. The most common side effects that can occur are menstrual cramps and spotting.
- Dilation and curettage (D & C) – the abortion that is made with the help of special surgical instruments. The procedure of this type of abortions takes the time of about 10 minutes. The women usually experience the following side effects: small cramps, spotting during about two weeks after the abortion.
- Induction abortion – a very rare abortion procedure. During this type of abortion the doctors inject special substances into the woman’s vagina and uterus. These substances cause the finishing of the woman’s pregnancy. Less than 1% of all abortions are performed with the help of this procedure. Most often, a woman is forced to do this kind of abortion, if it became known that the future child has severe anomalies.
